Millions of American children receive medical treatment due to asthma-related illnesses and complications. While asthma is a chronic disease, it can be controlled with preventative medication. Asthma is an allergic response to triggers such as dust, animal dander, or pollen. However, some children can develop asthma attacks due to cold weather or intense exercise. During an asthma attack, the airways become inflamed and restricted. The child may struggle to inhale and emit a wheezing sound when they breathe out. Very young infants with asthma may express discomfort during feeding times. If a child is diagnosed with asthma, their doctor will typically provide a treatment plan that includes a combination of fast-acting and ongoing medications. Children experiencing asthma attacks should use rescue inhalers to relax their airways. In some cases, children may need to take daily treatments to reduce inflammation and mitigate the severity of asthma attacks. Parents can support their children’s health by removing triggers, such as carpeting. Children should also engage in physical activity every day to increase their lung capacity.
