As the CEO of the Davis Street Community Center, Inc., Rose Padilla Johnson works with the underserved communities in San Leandro, California. Rose Padilla Johnson has been integral in expanding the San Leandro center to provide medical, health, and family services. The Davis Street Community Center not only provides these services, but it has also contributed to helping residents with special needs through its Stepping Stones program. To help parents of children who had special needs, the program was founded in 1975, and since this time, it has expanded to help this population with vocational, social, and living skills. Today, the program serves 250 adults with special needs that have access to art, wellness, employment, and independent living services through its four main focus: 1. Artful Steps – This program is an outlet for participants to express themselves creatively. Not only does it provide instruction, but it also promotes the talents of Center artists through community-based events and exhibits. 2. Wellness – This program focuses on helping participants with improving their quality of life. These concepts are expected to help them lead a healthier lifestyle. 3. Employment – This program helps participants prepare for a career. Using an appropriate curriculum, Stepping Stones staff members teach participants strategies for having a successful career. 3. Independent Living – Cooking, money management, laundry, shopping, communication, use of public transit, and other essential skills form the basis of the lessons provided to prepare people to live on their own. via WordPress https://ift.tt/3hj0izh

Rose Padilla Johnson has spent nearly 30 years as chief executive officer of the Davis Street Community Center, Inc., in San Leandro, California. As an executive leader with the center, Rose Padilla Johnson directs a variety of longstanding and innovative community services for individuals in San Leandro and throughout Alameda County, including nutritional cooking classes. Davis Street maintains relationships with a number of food banks throughout the region, but the organization is also committed to helping families develop healthy, sustainable eating habits that can be observed in the comfort of their own homes. Taking place in the modernized Davis Street demonstration kitchen, nutritional cooking classes focus on three key areas. First and foremost, classes seek to educate individuals about healthy eating choices, even when budgets and options are limited. Second, recipes and grocery shopping lists are developed, taking into account each family’s financial constraints, so that families are not forced to revert to old eating habits after finishing the class. Finally, Davis Street cooking classes offer a variety of culturally relevant recipes to choose from, and can be taught in English, Spanish, or Cantonese.
