The Davis Street Community Center food pantry provides over 15,000 pounds of food monthly. It distributes food to over 1,000 families and 2,500 individuals. The program operates with donations from the Alameda County Food Bank, residents, farmers, and local grocery stores. Eligible families receive a box or bag containing pasta, canned food, dairy products, meats, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Those eligible for this program must have low incomes. They must also prove they live in San Leandro, Eden, San Lorenzo, Ashland, Castro Valley, and Cherryland, near Hayward. Hayward. While visitors are not required to make an appointment to pick up food from the pantry, they must fill out a form. Davis Street Community Center has been a part of the San Leandro community since 1972. It started as a mission of San Leandro First Christian Church, which gave emergency support services to low-income residents. In 1990, it became an incorporated nonprofit that expanded its scope to include providing medical, dental, pediatric, behavioral, and women's health services, in addition to the free clothing and food pantry programs.
